| Major Construction Begins on Havelock City | ||
| Work beings today on the superstructure construction of Phase 1 of Havelock City, soon to be Colombo’s landmark city-within-a-city. Located at the sprawling site on which the Wellawatte Spinning and Weaving Mills was once located. Havelock City introduces a new concept in real estate to Sri Lanka. When completed, it will include eight blocks of condominium housing (1,080 luxury apartments), as well as a 300 room hotel, 200 service apartments, a shopping center with 250 shops and major department stores, a Cineplex, swimming pool and international food court. The project will create 3.2 million square feet of exciting new commercial and residential space in the heart of Colombo, making it the single largest mixed development project ever undertaken in South Asia. Mireka Capital Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., a joint venture between the Singapore-based real estate specialists the Shing Kwan Group and the Bank of Ceylon, will own, develop and manage the ambitious project. Major building complexes in the Shing Kwan Group’s real estate portfolio include the Beijing Landmark Tower, Shanghdimart, Mandarin Garden Hotel China and The Quayside Singapore, among many others. The Group is no stranger to Sri Lanka either, as it is the major shareholder of Overseas Realty (Ceylon) Limited – the Owner, Developer and Manager of the World Trade Center, Colombo. Having completed the piling work for phase 1 of the project, Mireka Capital Land has awarded the contract for major construction to Shanghai Construction Group (SCG), a leading international construction company from China. SCG has been responsible for many of Shanghai’s landmark buildings during the last 15 years, including the famous Shanghai Exhibition Centre, the Shanghai Pu Dong International Airport, and the Shanghai Stadium and International Conference Centre. The steel-arch Lu Pu bridge, which has the longest span in the world, was also build by this award winning firm. Other members of the international design and construction team that have come together on the Havelock City project include the East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Company, Squire Mech Pte Ltd of Singapore, internationally acclaimed interior design consultant Dale Keller, quantity surveying services consultants David Langdon & Seach Singapore Pte Ltd., and project advisors Tao & Kinoshita Ltd. Design Group Five International Pvt. Ltd., the local architecture firm selected for the project, will team up with Laki Senanayake and Shiranee Balasuriya to create the lush landscape that has been incorporated into the design to complement the state-of-the-art high-rises of Havelock City. |
